SaddleBrooke Ranch Pickleball Association is one of the most popular places to play pickleball in Arizona. There are twenty-four outdoor hard courts. These are dedicated courts with permanent lines and nets. Players have access to restrooms, water, and lights. A membership allows you to play in organized round robin play and residency at SaddleBrooke Ranch is required to use the courts. Reservations are available for members, and residents can entertain friends and relatives.

The SaddleBrooke Ranch Pickleball Club is the largest club on the Ranch and boasts a membership of about 750 residents. Despite the size of the club, courts are almost always available for drop-in players.

Beginner lessons are available, as well as help in choosing an appropriate paddle. POP Tennis is truly the sport that everyone can immediately play and enjoy.  It thoroughly engages and exhilarates you!

Unlike sports that require prior lessons or a measure of athletic ability, children, young and middle-aged adults, and the older set, can just grab a racquet and tennis ball, and go out and have a fantastic time. This makes POP Tennis a great family and Senior activity. Additionally, one of the fun things about POP Tennis, is that everyone has their own, unique playing style – so have a blast, as you find or create yours!

In POP Tennis, the court is smaller than tennis, and the racquet or paddle is shorter — so that the hitting surface is closer to the hand — and the ball is less lively. Additionally, the net is lower, and the players serve underhand—not overhand, as in Tennis.

The huge benefits for POP Tennis players are that the rallies are generally longer; there is more fun and exciting net play and (net) poaching; there is less court to cover; there are no overhead serves to learn; and as a result, there is far less running and wear and tear on the back, legs, feet, and shoulders.

An active POP Tennis group has been created here on the Ranch.  See if this is an activity you would enjoy.  Contact any of the regular players to get a taste of this new way of enhancing your Ranch experience.

The mission of the SBRPA is to establish SaddleBrooke Ranch as a premiere pickleball community serving all skill levels and formats of play, thereby promoting the passion and sport of the game both inside and outside our community.

Strategies  (as prioritized by our membership)

The year is winding down, and the holidays will soon be upon us. Please take advantage of the new stock in the pro shop, our Holiday Sale (December 6-12), or by placing a special order prior to December 15, to use up any credit book funds you may have before they expire December 31. Stay in tune with the Forecaddie to keep up-to-date with everything pro shop and golf course related. In the sections following, you will find all the information relating to this month in golf, as well as contact information for our golf associations and our Greens Committee.

Pro Shop Hours – Open 30 minutes before the first tee time and 1 hour before shotguns. The pro shop closes at 4:00pm. Pro shop staff will carry the pro shop cell phone (520-561-1196) until 5:30.

Staff is available until one hour before sunset.

First tee time: 11-1 to 11-14: 7:30am 11-15 to 11-30: 7:45am

Last tee time: 11-1 to 11-30: 4:00pm

Shotguns: 8:00/1:00

November Maintenance Schedule:

We will continue closing one hole per nine to cart traffic to help maintain the quality of the turf. We will continue our program of resting the natural turf one week per month, except in December and January, when it will be rested for two weeks in those months due to the slowing of the growth rate of the rye overseed. The Bermuda turf is slowing down and will go fully into dormancy following our first frost. Please support our maintenance staff by filling divots with sand and repairing ball marks on the green. Cart traffic is highly damaging to the turf, so please limit time on the turf as much as possible. We will delay tee times for one hour two days a month to help facilitate painting the course. Painting will be done on regular weekday tee time days (Mon, Wed, or Fri). Back Nine morning 9-hole times will not be available on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on a year-round basis to allow maintenance time to complete weekly tasks.

After playing golf one Saturday during the summer, Joel Pritchard, congressman from Washington State and Bill Bell, successful businessman, returned to Pritchard’s home on Bainbridge Island, WA (near Seattle) to find their families sitting around with nothing to do. The property had an old badminton court so Pritchard and Bell looked for some badminton equipment and could not find a full set of rackets. They improvised and started playing with ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball. At first, they placed the net at badminton height of 60 inches and volleyed the ball over the net.  As the weekend progressed, the players found that the ball bounced well on the asphalt surface and soon the net was lowered to 36 inches. The following weekend, Barney McCallum was introduced to the game at Pritchard’s home. Soon, the three men created rules, relying heavily on badminton. They kept in mind the original purpose, which was to provide a game that the whole family could play together.

September has arrived. The 19th through the 30th we will be closed to prep the course for a winter of dormant turf. We are extremely excited about the health and density of the turf and expect great playing conditions this winter! Every month Mike and Ken will conduct a free golf clinic. All residents and their guests are welcome to attend, and there is no cost. Please sign up in the pro shop. The staff have a book behind the counter with all the scheduled clinics that you can sign up for. You are welcome to attend as often and as many as you like! The clinics will cover basic technique and mechanics of each topic and are great for learning a new skill or brushing up a skill that needs some work. The next clinic will be in October due to the course maintenance closure. In October we will cover pitching on Monday, the 24th, at 2:00 pm at the practice chipping green.
